On the Ground Down Under: Looking Ahead to Australian Growth

Australia

September 15, 2026

Australia has long been a market that ‘punches above its weight’ when it comes to infrastructure investment, both on a domestic and international scale.

We count many of the Australian superannuation funds and fund managers as part of our collective industry voice, as well as international investors and advisors who are active in the market, and it’s always a pleasure to connect with GIIA members and key stakeholders across the country’s infrastructure landscape.

Our latest visit to Australian soil saw GIIA Chief Executive Jon Phillips visit members and partners from New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and beyond.

This comes as our latest Global Infrastructure Index with Ipsos shows two thirds of Australians are comfortable with private sector investment in infrastructure if it delivers results for the country. And GIIA members themselves have been involved in nearly US $150 billion of closed transactions in Australia since 2022.

As part of our packed agenda in Australia, we spent time with Macquarie Asset Management sharing our latest global insights and advocacy priorities ahead of their Investor Day, as well as understanding exactly how they see the local market.

We were also proud to be a silver sponsor of Infrastructure Partnerships Australia 2026 Partnerships Conference, bringing together public and private sector leaders from across the country. Jon Phillips spoke at the conference, where conversations centered on the market’s overall attractiveness for investment, productivity challenges, and opportunities across water, energy, data centres, and transportation.

Joining with member IFM Investors, we co-hosted a busy breakfast meeting for members and investors. This included exploring public attitudes to Australian infrastructure investment, consensus on the need for further investment, the private sector’s role in delivering this, and the priorities and challenges.

Our visit closed with a panel event together with PwC Australia focusing on infrastructure’s role in driving productivity, resilience, and long-term economic performance. The event also saw the launch of PwC’s latest report Infrastructure to 2050, which sets out how to accelerate Australia’s next era of growth.

Australia remains a key market for investors, with a substantial infrastructure renewal task ahead. To keep competing for private capital, governments at all levels need to maintain momentum, and avoid complacency.

Thanks to all involved for a week of productive discussions and events. We look forward to continuing these conversations!
