Our Letter in the Financial Times: A task for whichever party wins the UK election

With the UK once again lagging behind competitors in GIIA's Pulse Survey, our CEO's letter to the next government seeks to increase the attractiveness of the UK to investors who provide much-needed private finance for infrastructure and place infrastructure at the heart of policy.

From our CEO

We finished a busy May on a high note, with our inaugural Infrastructure Investment for Sustainable Futures conference this week. With a real buzz in the room and a full day’s agenda, GIIA members and guests shared multiple examples of best practice on integrating ESG considerations, investing in new technologies, active supply chain management, attracting and retaining talent, and practical advice on mitigating greenwashing claims. With many thanks to our hosts UBS, and sponsors CMS, and KPMG.

Building our profile and impact in the U.S. is a key objective this year and GIIA was stateside once again this month for Infrastructure Week 2024. With a packed schedule of events and meetings across Washington, D.C. and New York, it was great to see GIIA at the heart of discussions with major stakeholders – and rightly so, with our latest 'Pulse Survey' once again ranking the United States as the world's most attractive investment destination. I have been attending Infrastructure Week since 2017 but this is the first year we have played such an active role, convening members and government officials across a range of events to hammer home the vital role that private capital will continue to play in future-proofing the nation’s infrastructure. A personal highlight was the visit to see the New Terminal One project under construction at JFK, which brought back fond memories of my time at Heathrow and similar visits to see T5 under construction. This transformational project is being led by GIIA member Ferrovial, and the project leaders provided a fabulous briefing and tour to our delegation of members and stakeholders. You can read more about our time in the U.S. in David Quam and Alessandro Pecorari’s spotlight report here.

Across the pond here in the UK, the big news this month has of course been the announcement of a general election on 4 July. With work in Westminster temporarily disrupted as election campaigns kick off, we’re gearing up to hit the ground running once the new government is in place, and will continue to play our part in advocating for a stable and attractive policy and regulatory framework.

Looking ahead to June, we’ll once again be convening our Emerging Leaders in Infrastructure network for our 2024 Summer Reception, kindly hosted by DLA Piper. The network is growing from strength to strength, and is a great platform for colleagues in the earlier stages of their careers to build connections across the industry whilst staying up to date with the latest developments in the sector. If you haven’t already nominated a member of your team to join the network, feel free to get in touch.

Finally, I’d like encourage members to dial into our next All Member Call of 2024 on 9 July (rescheduled from 27 June) to explore the implications of the UK election results, other advocacy updates, and a look ahead at upcoming events, and ask us any questions you may have.
